Most vehicles (unless MOT exempt) need an MOT check and a new certificate annually once they're 3 years old. Visit www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk to find out when your vehicle needs its MOT.

You can arrange an MOT test for your vehicle up to a month (minus a day) before the previous MOT certificate expires. You can find out when your MOT test is due by clicking the link above or by looking at your previous MOT certificate.

Typically, a MOT test takes about 1 hour. If your car does not pass its MOT it could take longer than an hour or you may have to do a retest depending on the extent of repairs needed.

Most MOT test fails are on simple maintenance items.
Perform a check to see if your lights are working by getting someone to walk around your car whilst the lights are on. Pressing the brake pedal should ignite your brake light(s). Test your tyre pressure with a pressure gauge and check the tread depth with a tread depth gauge, it should be 1.6mm throughout the circumference of the tyre in the centre. Check your windscreen for damage, any crack that exceeds 40mm in length will fail your car.

If it is your car's first MOT (e.g. If it was manufactured 3 years prior to the test) you are required to bring the V5 certificate. You must also bring the V5 if you have changed your number plate since its last MOT.

A failed car must have its necessary repairs undertaken before it is retested to prove its roadworthiness. We can provide repairs should your car fail its MOT. Most of the time the car can be retested on the same day.
